De tentoonstelling stelt geen vragen bij het werk van William Willoughby Hooper.
Dat wordt op Wikipedia wel gedaan.
Maar de vragen die er gesteld worden hebben geen betrekking, lijkt me,
op deze foto.
Wat de rol van George Western bij deze foto is, blijft me onduidelijk.
Misschien brengt de catalogus hierover duidelijkheid
maar daar kan ik nu niet bij.

Een verdere introductie.
De tentoonstelling plaatst Ranjit Singh in het hirstorisch
en religieus perspectief.
Maar ik was vooral benieuwd naar de werpwapens: de Quoits of
Chakkar Quoits. Ik kende ze niet en het filmpje op de website
van de Wallace Collection gaf aanleiding genoeg om
nieuwsgierig te zijn.
Later gaat de tentoonstelling er verder op in.

Ranjit Singh: Sikh, Warrior, King

Veel mensen zullen Ranjit Singh niet kennen dus even een introductie:

Ranjit Singh (Gujranwala, 13 november 1780 – Lahore, 27 juni 1839), bijgenaamd Sher-e-Punjab (de leeuw van de Punjab), was een maharadja of vorst in de eerste helft van de 19e eeuw over het Sikhrijk, een groot gebied in wat tegenwoordig Noordwest-India en Pakistan is. Als dusdanig wordt hij ook wel sikhkeizer genoemd. Ranjit Singh wist dit rijk zelf te verenigen en wist daarmee te voorkomen dat dit deel van India tijdens zijn leven in handen van de Britten viel.

Door de zelfstandigheid van het land van Ranjit Singh, is hij
voor veel Sikhs wereldwijd nog steeds een voorbeeld en een ideaal.
Afgelopen jaar had The Wallace Collection een tentoonstelling met
voorwerpen van Ranjit Singh of voorwerpen uit zijn omgeving of
uit zijn tijd.
Een prachtige collectie.

Een korte introductie van The Wallace Collection is misschien ook
op zijn plaats:

De Wallace Collection is een nationaal Brits museum, gevestigd in het herenhuis Hertford House aan de Manchester Gardens in Londen. De getoonde kunstwerken komen voort uit de private kunstverzameling van Richard Seymour-Conway, de 4e markies van Hertford (1800-1870).

De Wallace Collection
De collectie bestaat uit historische stukken (schilderijen, juwelen, porselein, meubilair, wapenuitrusting en munten) uit de privécollectie van Richard Wallace. Het grootste deel van de collectie is Franse 18e-eeuwse kunst met o.a. een staatsieportret van Lodewijk XV en een doek van Jean-Honoré Fragonard. Daarnaast telt de collectie 26 doeken van Jean-Baptiste Greuze, dertig van François Boucher, van Jean-Antoine Watteau zijn er tien; alleen het Louvre doet het beter met veertien doeken. Ook Rembrandt, Willem van Mieris, Frans Hals en andere meesters zoals Diego Velázquez vullen de collectie.

Zijn weduwe schonk de collectie in 1897 aan het Rijk. Het museum opende de deuren in 1900.

Als ik naar het Rijksmuseum ga, kijk ik altijd even in het
Aziatisch paviljoen voor dit beeld.
Het is een prachtige, klassieke Hindoe voorstelling hier in
een prachtige uitvoering.
