Inebriated: bedwelmend. Florence, Uffizi, Michelangelo Merisi detto Caravaggio, Baccus, circa 1597 – 1598. Oil on canvas.
The Wedding Feast, oil on canvas, was painted by Gerrit van Honthorst (Gherardo delle Notti) circa 1613-17. The Wedding Feast was one of Honthorst loftiest achievements during his Italian period, when he lived mainly in Rome and where he was won over by the painting of Caravaggio. The convivial theme, immensely popular in the 17th century, is developed here with a particular focus on facial expression and on the handling of light. Grand Duke Ferdinando II of Tuscany presented the Wedding Feast in 1627 to his mother, Maria Magdalena of Austria, who hung it in her Villa di Poggio Imperiale. The picture was severely damaged during the Mafia car-bomb attack on the Uffizi in May 1993.
